The top layer of our skin (aka stratum corneum) is made of a trio of lipids that include cholesterol, fatty acids, and ceramides. The lipids act as the ‘glue’ that holds our cells together. They hydrate our skin and keep environmental irritants out. Ceramides make up of half of this vital barrier.  

Why Do We Need Ceramides?

Ceramides decrease with age and other factors including pollution, sun damage, low humidity climates, over-exfoliation, and hormonal and genetic issues, all of which weaken the skin barrier allowing for transepidermal water loss (TEWL). This causes dehydration and dryness. 

The good news is that synthetic ceramides are identical to natural ceramides, so replacing the loss is easy with products rich in ceramides and other lipids. Below are our favorites:
